Description

Register your interest in presenting a poster as part of the SGSSS Summer School 2017 poster competition!

We are pleased to announce that for the first time, we will be running a poster competition during Summer School 2017!

  • The competition will take place on Tuesday 6 June only; ideally those presenting posters are attending Summer School that day as well although all Summer School participants are welcome to propose their poster!
  • Existing posters only – either something you’ve already presented or something you will be presenting in the near future.
  • There will be space for 18 posters if using A0 format in portrait layout. If posters are in landscape format we will accept fewer than 18 due to landscape posters taking up more than one board.
  • We will have a panel of judges for the posters, comprised of academic staff at Summer School, and SGSSS Directorate members.
  • There will be a prize!

To keep it simple, the posters will be assessed on how they do the following:

  • Provide a brief and interesting summary of your research
  • Showcase your work and disseminate your findings in a focused visual presentation – use of images, layout
  • Catch people’s attention
  • Are informative – concise and easy to read

To include (contents will vary depending on what stage you’re at in your PhD):

  • A title
  • Your name
  • An abstract
  • Introduction/background to your research project
  • Methods
  • Results (key findings)
  • Discussion Conclusion
  • Key references

The poster competition is only open to SGSSS students who have registered for and confirmed their place at Summer School 2017!

The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science is the UK's largest facilitator of funding, training and support for doctoral students in social science. By combining the expertise of sixteen universities across Scotland, the school facilitates world-class PhD research. The school is funded jointly by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Scottish Funding Council.

SGSSS is a highly attractive environment for doctoral research. Not only do our partner universities offer an excellent research environment, we also offer comprehensive and world-class research training in a number of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary pathways. In addition, the school manages a programme of advanced training courses and an annual summer school which together offers our students further opportunities to develop their research, knowledge exchange and transferable professional skills.

At the heart of the SGSSS is the Doctoral Training Partnership (formerly the Doctoral Training Centre) in Scotland. The SGSSS was established in 2011 and is the biggest of 14 Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) accredited DTPs in the United Kingdom. The bid for renewed funding has been successful and from 1 October 2017 the SGSSS will be one of the ESRC's 14 Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP)
